Affordable Housing Thanks To AARP!

April 24, 2023

Introduction

In recent news, lawmakers in Washington state and Florida have passed AARP-backed legislation that will expand affordable housing options for older adults. This is a significant step towards addressing the growing need for housing access among the senior population.

Affordable Housing Promotes Aging In Place

In Washington state, legislators approved a bill that loosens restrictions on accessory dwelling units (ADUs), also known as backyard cottages or in-law suites. These small, self-contained living spaces can be built on the same property as a single-family home, providing an additional source of affordable structures for seniors. The new legislation will make it easier for homeowners to build ADUs, helping to increase the supply of affordable housing in the state.

Similarly, in Florida, Gov. Ron DeSantis and lawmakers passed a bill that will provide funding for affordable housing programs and initiatives. This includes funding for the construction of new affordable housing units, as well as programs to help seniors with home repairs and modifications. The goal is to help seniors age in place, allowing them to remain in their homes and communities as they grow older. The bill is called the Live Local act and is a great template for why senior communities are sound investment opportunities

The passage of these bills is a major victory for AARP and its advocacy efforts on behalf of older adults. AARP has long been a champion of affordable housing, recognizing the importance of safe, accessible, and affordable housing for seniors. With the passage of this legislation, seniors in Washington state and Florida will have greater access to affordable housing options, helping them to live independently and with dignity.

Affordable Housing- Where’s Next?

As our population continues to age, the need for affordable housing will only grow! This White House administration is already legislating to keep housing costs low (details here). It is encouraging to see lawmakers in individual states like Washington state and Florida taking action to keep up with this critical issue. California, Nevada, and Arizona are states Zemplee definitely hopes to see more affordable senior housing in. We can only hope that other states will follow their lead and take similar steps to expand affordable options for seniors. Where would you like to see more housing access?
